• The Manawa Tītī award is a reimagined ‘player of the day’ certificate, offering tamariki a free pass to Splash Palace as a healthier reward.

• The award, named by Te Wharekura o Arowhenua principal Gary Davis, symbolises strength, determination, and whānau connections.

• Nine Southland sports codes have so far joined the initiative with 7000 passes available in the first year.

Southland sporting codes are excited to provide a healthier alternative for tamariki with the creation of the Manawa Tītī award.

Designed in conjunction with sports in Invercargill, the reimagined ‘player of the day’ certificate includes a free pass to Splash Palace thanks to the Invercargill City Council and I-Cue.

Te Wharekura o Arowhenua principal Gary Davis gifted the Manawa Tītī name to the award in recognition of the heart of the muttonbird, symbolising strength, determination, and whānau connections.

Touch, rugby league, football, cricket, hockey, netball, softball, water polo and Kī-o-Rahi were the first sports to join up to the initiative, with 7000 passes available in the first year.

Invercargill City Council manager, Aquatic Services, Steve Cook said he was proud Splash Palace could be part of the Manawa Tītī partnership with Active Southland’s Healthy Families Invercargill team.  

"This initiative promotes healthy living through positive incentives. The aquatic centre offers a place where tamariki can enjoy quality time with their whānau or have fun with friends.

“Creating long-lasting memories with those we love is a rewarding investment in our own

wellbeing. That’s why receiving a free swim pass is an ideal incentive.”

General manager Lauren Roney said the Southland Cricket Association was excited to support the initiative.

“We love what the certificates represent and are looking forward to presenting these to our young cricketers.”

Southland Football development and operations manager Iain Walker was also a glad to see football involved.

“What a fantastic initiative from Healthy Families Invercargill. Southland Football are delighted to support this wonderful idea.”

Active Southland has worked with each sport to make it easier for coaches and schools to access and present the new certificates.
