Party Guides Support Safer Celebrations for Southland Youth

With school balls underway and rugby season amping up, young Southlanders are heading into a busy stretch of social events.

While these celebrations are a highlight for many young people, there’s also a shared responsibility to make sure the good times don't come with unnecessary risks.

To help ensure these events are safe and enjoyable, What About You? Murihiku Party Guides has been launched. The guide is a collaborative effort led by HATA (Healthy Attitudes Towards Alcohol), New Zealand Police and the National Public Health Service.

Designed to support both parents and students, the guide offers essential information around planning safe social events. From legal responsibilities to practical safety tips, it aims to reduce alcohol-related harm and promote a more informed and responsible party culture.

Healthy Families Invercargill Systems Innovator Sarah Tuapati said it is important that young people and their parents understand the risks involved with alcohol consumption.

“By offering clear, accessible guidelines, we hope to support parents and students in making informed, safe choices,” she said.

“We believe this resource will help reduce potential harm and lead to open discussions about responsible partying.”

The guide addresses a range of topics including the legalities of underage drinking, advice for planning and organising a party, and what to do if issues arise at an event.

“Whether you are hosting or attending, these rules will help with turning good times into great memories, without the harmful side effects of alcohol incidents – it’s all about keeping our young people safe,” MrsTuapati said.

Southland Alcohol Harm Prevention Hayden McNaught supported the development of the Party Guide and contributed to creating the guidelines and FAQs to clarify the legal aspects surrounding the provision of alcohol to individuals under 18.
